Chicken Experience for Kids

$155.00

As the number of children living on farms has decreased and as schools focus on teaching children what to eat, rather than where their food comes from, children are less likely to understand the origins of their food. More than a third of children in the US (aged 4-7) think cheese, bacon, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, shrimp, and hamburgers come from plants.

Parents often want to educate their children but fear that exposing children to animal processing may be too gruesome. The Chicken Experience for Kids Class can help! The class teaches children where their meat comes from, but does so in a gentle and loving way.

As part of the class, children and their guardians first tour Joanna’s Farm and explore how small, local farms raise pastured-chickens.

Next, children have an opportunity to become comfortable with holding and handling a live chicken. Finally, they learn how to humanely and respectfully sacrifice, scald, pluck, and eviscerate a chicken.

This class is completely hands on. With step-by-step guidance from farmer Joanna, children process one pastured chicken themselves. Children then take the processed chicken home, where guardians have an opportunity to further teach them how to turn the bird into their favorite chicken meal.

This class is open to children ages 6-12.

The price of this class is for one child and one guardian and includes one whole chicken for the child to take home.

If the parent/guardian would like to work on an additional chicken alongside the child, you can purchase an additional chicken with prices ranging from $20-$35.

The class is outdoors. If weather does not allow us to hold the class on the scheduled date, we will schedule a rain date. The farm is located in Kyle, about 15 minutes from south Austin.
